The Role of the Artist in Society

Last night I gave a short speech at the RAWA (Renaissance Artists and Writers Association)  Concert in Kolkata.  The program was held in a packed auditorium at Science City. I spoke about RAWA, and its aim of liberating artists  from the fetters of political repression and from the domination of commercial interests.  I also explained the significance of  Prabhat Samgiita, the collection of 5018 spiritual songs composed by my guru, Shrii Shrii Anandamurti. Here are some photos (taken by Svapan De) of the event:

New CD Is In The Works

I am writing this post while sitting in India. But before I left on this three week trip I gave 11 rough tracks (home recordings of my new songs) to my friend and record producer Kalinath.  He is now at work making arrangements of these songs and when I get back to the US in November we will start recording.

Kalinath is a gifted, young reggae musician and the finished songs will blend my acoustic-folk style with the beat of World Music. If you want to find out more about the new CD and if you would like to get some unique gifts in return for your early pre-order and support for the CD, then visit my project page . Thanks for your consideration.

World House Kirtan: A New Single

I released a new single song today which is now available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/dadaveda4 .  It is Baba Nam Kevalam World House Kirtankiirtan tune set to a pulsing electronic house music beat.

A few years ago when I was making  the “Love is the Best” CD I came to the studio with my acoustic guitar and played a few bars of Baba Nam Kevalam.  My producer, Ryan Sam, recorded what I did and told me to come back the following week.  When I came back he had transformed it into an 11 minute electronic version of Baba Nam Kevalam.  We put the 11 minute version on the CD, but it was too long for digital downloads. I noticed that young people like this kind of music and we recently edited the original “Kiirtan Remix” track into a radio-friendly three minute song.

I am going to promote it with New Age and electronic music radio stations and who knows, maybe people will be swinging to the rhythms of Baba Nam Kevalam at dance clubs around the world.  You can get download the track at CD Baby or at iTunes and other online music outlets.

Can Donald Trump “Make America Great Again?”

By Dada Vedaprajinananda

The surprise candidate of the presidential primary race is Donald Trump. He is now the front runner in public opinion polls among Republicans and as I travel around I hear ordinary people saying good things about him. Despite his public appeal he is widely denounced by commentators on the left and on the right. One political pundit, though not in favor of Trump, said that the reason for his success is that his campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” speaks to what common people are feeling.

Let’s look at the slogan and see whether Trump can actually deliver on his promise. Trump’s general idea is that America was once a great superpower but is now in a state of decline due to “stupid” politicians. Before we ask whether America is truly in decline and what is the cause of that decline, it is important to decide whether America was once “Great.” Continue reading

Q and A with Dada Veda at the Spiritual Media Blog

The spiritual media blog located at www.spiritualmediablog.com has just published a lengthy question and answer interview with me.  They asked about my memoir, From Brooklyn to Benares and Back, and were especially interested to hear about my experiences during the last days of the Soviet Union and events in Syria before the current civil war.  I was also able to give a long answer to their question about how to improve meditation.  You can read the interview at this link.
